Classical vs. Romantic Thought
The Glass Menagerie
Laura’s glass menagerie represents the fragile nature of her family situation and changes in Laura’s personality. This is exemplified when Amanda and Tom argue about the time Tom spends out at night, and Tom throws his coat. His coat hits the shelf where Laura keeps her glass menagerie, and several of the figurines fall to the floor and shatter. The fragility of the glass menagerie demonstrates the fragility of the family situation in the household. The breaking of the menagerie suggests that conflict between family members generated by one family member imposing her will on another shatters the weak peace in the household. This is clear because the conflict between Tom and Amanda is based on Amanda’s desire to control Tom’s behavior out of the house. The glass menagerie also represents Laura’s personality. This is verified when Jim is over the house, and accidentally knocks over the unicorn, breaking off its horn. The horn that the unicorn has makes it unique, like Laura and her disability. When Jim dances with Laura though, she loses her disability and becomes normal, just as in dancing Jim breaks off the unicorn’s horn. This whole event suggests that differences are more easily overcome when approached with kindness and gentleness than when approached with rigid discipline and the iron fist of force.
Another symbol in The Glass Menagerie is the candle that Laura blows out after Jim and Tom leave the apartment for the last time. Jim admits to Laura that he is in fact engaged to someone else, and so cannot be her gentleman caller. He leaves, and when Amanda becomes frustrated with the failure of the evening and takes it out on Tom he storms out, never to return. It is here that Williams suggests that the absence of a normalizing force and the departure of a close family member push Laura over the edge, so that she loses all hope of regaining normality. This might relate to Williams’ life with his sister in that after a time she is admitted to an asylum, and might also be equated to his sister’s surgery. After her surgery, her uniqueness and personality were extinguished, just as Tom’s and Jim’s departure put out Laura’s candle and extinguish her personality.

Magical Realism
The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruìz Zafón is the tale of The Shadow of the Wind by Julìan Carax. This magnificent myriad of colliding lives is told from the perspective of a young Daniel Sempere, the son of a rare book salesman. Daniel, curious in his adolescence, realizes Carax appears to be a ghost author-no one seems to know who he is, and his books are apparently being systematically destroyed. He follows his inquisitive nature on a hunt for the truth; along the way he discovers a labyrinth of human connections surrounding the author, falls in love, and stands up to the brutality of an unjust regime.
Daniel’s adventure is set in 1945, against a backdrop of post-Spanish Civil War political fallout. When Daniel is eleven his father reveals to him Barcelona’s biggest kept literary secret: the Cemetery of Forgotten Books. Here Daniel finds The Shadow of the Wind by Julìan Carax, and its story captures his imagination so completely that he searches for more books by Carax. He quickly finds that they are being destroyed- and sets out with pertinacious curiousity to understand why. His travels pair him with a former government agent- that is from before Franco took power. With Fermìn’s help, Daniel follows the trail of Carax’s literary oblivion and uncovers the very real human drama of Carax’s life.
Although The Shadow of the Wind is technically magical realism, Zafón’s skill as a writer allows the tale to swing through several genres. The horror of the tale chills the spine at a description of an abandoned house. When Carax’s childhood lover’s father went to visit the mansion for the first time “The dark shadow of Marisela’s blood still covered the walls,” (Zafón, 235) after the owner had just barely recovered from his own attempted murder. Veering away from horror, the tale becomes one of romance as Daniel remembers “…that bewitchment of pale, tremulous skin, that first brush of the lips, or about the mirage that seemed to shimmer in every pore of the skin,” (Zafón, 241) when he first falls in love with Bea, his love interest in the second half of the novel. Then, broken family relations inspire tragedy in the tale when an old man reflects that the letter he is giving to Daniel is “‘The story of a woman I never knew, even though she bore my name and my blood,’”
(Zafón, 357) eliciting emotional response over the estranged father. Zafón’s use of more than adequate imagery in settings of horror, romance, and tragedy enable the story to peruse a vast selection of genres.
The Shadow of the Wind wins itself its genre of Magical realism however, mostly in Daniel’s ‘last’ act. In a fit of pusillanimous revenge, Carax’s antithesis, Inspector Fumero, attempts to shoot him. Daniel jumps into the path of the bullet and it “…went through [his] ribs.” (Zafón, 464) killing him. In spite of this, Daniel awakens a few days later and recovers well enough to marry Bea and have a child. In fact, he lives on to write a memoir of his investigation into the mysterious Carax. This magic is portrayed seamlessly, no reference is made to how or why this unreality is possible. This simplicity allows the fantastical to fit exactly into the surrounding realism.
I quite enjoyed the novel, finding its quiet wisdom concerning adolescence, family, love, and life well placed amidst the deftly crafted legend of the enigmatic author. The suspense kept me reading, and the happiness and humor kept me from becoming frustrated. The variety of technique and genre lifted The Shadow of the Wind above its contemporaries, displaying Zafón for the masterful writer he is. Being a bibliophile myself, this tale of a copious love of literature strikes a particular chord with me, allowing me to connect personally. If you like reading, and even if you do not, this book has more than a little bit for any reader.

Imagine a sailor, and you imagine a man lonely in his struggles and stoic in his survival amidst the beautiful tyranny of the unconquerable sea, the vast blue emptiness that covers our globe. So devoid of stability, devoid of safety, devoid of love; a place where a man might set himself against impossible odds and yet triumph gloriously whether his end lay at harbor or at the bottom of the deep blue. The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea tells the tale of a man leaving his life of eternal goodbyes for love, stability, and safety. His falling out with the great and glorious unknown not only marks the end of his life at sea, but also the end of Imperial Japan.
Yukio weaves his
The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea is a poignant story that can be difficult to apprehend because each phrase carries so much meaning. Not a word is wasted on pointless description, which I enjoyed as a stark contrast to Tess of the d’Urbervilles and other Victorian manuscripts. I found the material of the book at first hard to swallow, as much of the content is taboo in the United States, but when this is dealt with and true meaning is drawn from the book it is a delightfully enjoyable read. It is heavy and deep, but it leaves one with an allegory to remember, not just an interesting story to read for the moment.
Volumes for Vietnam
When I think of someone who influenced me I do not think of those people who have moved me only to speak or to think as they do. I think of people who have moved me to act as they do.
Reading Leaving Microsoft to Change the World by John Wood has influenced me to do more than just think that I should follow my passion no matter the price as he gave up luxurious expatriate living to give opportunities to underprivileged children. It has made me believe that opportunities should belong to everyone, and that there are no limits to human innovation and accomplishment. These things John Wood has made me think and believe, but most importantly John Wood has inspired me to act.
As he chronicled and reflected on his journey into charity, I began mine. Brainstorming with the friend who recommended the book, we decided to build a library with Room to Read. I knew that if I wanted to reach my goal of 4,000 dollars to build a library in Vietnam, I would need to take chances. I knew that I would need to build a plan and follow through with it; I knew that I would need to work with people I had never met before to accomplish my goal, and I knew that I would need to work hard until the job was done.
First, I gathered a group of close friends to establish a plan of action. Intending to gather most of our funds from library and book store patrons, we approached libraries and local shops about setting up collection boxes. We were refused. Immediately, I realized that we would need guidance if we wanted to build our library. I determined that the most obvious place to go for advice would be the source of my influence.
I called Room to Read, John Wood’s charity, and acquired knowledge of several fundraising options and techniques. I set up a webpage with them for the fundraiser so that donors could donate instantly. Next, I planned events to raise money by donation, and set a deadline for the project. My friends and I approached the libraries a second time, and bargained for the right to advertise our fundraiser in their facilities. We spoke to teachers at our school in charge of our annual “Coin War” and convinced them to send the proceeds to our charity.
Being in the center of an organization bent on one singular goal is teaching me how to better build relationships with individuals and work with them to get things done. I’m learning to set goals and meet deadlines, and I’m learning to balance a busy schedule. Most importantly, I’m learning to take chances and be passionate about what I do, because if I am not passionate about what I do, then no one else will be either. Just as John Wood used his skills and his passion to change the world, I too will use my education and passion to change the world.
Boy Scouts
Boy Scouts taught me moral responsibility, independence, and leadership. First, I learned moral responsibility through the Scout Law and Oath and by earning both of my religious medals. Second, I learned independence and ingenuity by designing and executing my Eagle Scout project, and I learned resilience on my two trips to Philmont and on my many camping trips. Third, I developed an understanding of leadership in my leadership positions, and later by serving as a teacher and an example for younger scouts. These things Boy Scouts taught me, and these things I will carry with me for the rest of my life. My moral responsibility will help me to make the right decisions and be a positive influence. My independence, ingenuity, and resilience will help me to create productive change the world around me. Finally, my leadership skills will help me to be influential in everything I do.
Language and Northwestern
“Language shapes the way we think, and determines what we can think about.” – Benjamin Lee Whorf
The human experience has a meaning that both transcends and defies language, and yet it is most clearly defined by language. A description of events lacks meaning without the poetry of language; some say that the utility of language lacks the ability to describe the human experience in its full realities. Benjamin Lee Whorf holds that language is not just a tool for description, but in fact defines how one thinks. This to me rings of truth, because for my whole life I have been thinking in English, and even with my limited understanding of the French language I can see that to think in French would be an entirely different experience. For instance, instead of power being just a noun in French it is also a verb. What new meaning might this hold? What different thoughts might the French language enable one to think? How might I better understand foreign philosophy and literature by achieving fluency in that tongue? The idea that what language one speaks influences what one can think about has changed the way I think about language; language is no longer just a tool to me, but a gateway to new ideas and greater meaning. At Northwestern University I will be able to explore the meaning of language in the linguistics department with the variety of available research and study abroad opportunities.
Language is a gateway to new ideas on the simplest level because in speaking a foreign language one could speak to new people with different ideas. What language one speaks determines at least in part what one thinks about, according to Whorf. Accepting this axiom, by having fluency in only one language I am restricted to speaking only with people who share certain restrictions in their thinking. Only the English speaking body of knowledge would be open to me. I am simply too inquisitive to allow myself to be held to only that one body of knowledge, and so have set my sights on learning many languages. By learning these new languages I can converse with the native speakers, and open myself to their body of knowledge; I will be able to soak in their ideas and opinions and better understand their culture, history, and social climate. The study abroad opportunities at Northwestern will allow me to converse directly with native speakers, in countries from France to Italy to Japan. I will be able to participate in summer programs like the IES Arles Summer Program and the Padova Summer Program. These opportunities to communicate abroad will give me the opportunity to communicate with foreign people who have ideas foreign to the English language.
A greater understanding of language offers a greater understanding of life by opening a greater wealth of philosophies and ideas up for my understanding. It is often said of the Koran that in order to fully understand its meaning and beauty one must read it in Arabic. This seems true of most literature, as I have discovered in my reading of L’étranger by Albert Camus. The meaning of the text is comprehensible in English, but in French the text has greater depth. As the words are expressed exactly as the author intended, each phrase evokes exactly the cognitive reaction the author intended. This cannot be accomplished after translation because French grammar and vocabulary is different (as with the power verb) cannot be forced into English without losing some meaning. As well, any idioms used cannot be replicated in their exact meaning. This inconvenient truth about translation means that by understanding another language one can find new meaning in life- simply by virtue of the fact that more philosophies and thoughts might be apprehended as they were intended to be. Northwestern offers many research opportunities; some that work directly with professors in their initiatives, and others like the Language Music and Communication project. Of particular interest to me is working with professors like Brady Clark and Gregory Ward on their research about meaning in language. This opportunity to research the meaning in language will help me to understand why the same things said in different languages possess different meaning.
Comprehending multiple languages will allow me to think and communicate in new, more precise and profound ways. After I have spoken with people who speak foreign languages and learned from them, and read foreign philosophies and found new meaning, I will be better able to communicate these new ideas and meanings with a combination of my native tongue and the foreign tongues I have learned. I will no longer have to settle for English idioms and phrases that very nearly express my feelings, but be able to communicate exactly as I mean. The greater understanding of humanity that I achieve in my understanding of language will enable me to make more profound statements more precisely than I might with just knowledge of the English language and body of knowledge. This ability to express myself exactly will help me to be successful in Northwestern’s vibrant student community, where I hope to continue my philanthropic efforts in building libraries in Vietnam. Using my greater knowledge of language attained in the study abroad and research opportunities and Northwestern, I will be better able to convince people of the importance of my cause, and therefore have a greater impact on the world around me. In this way my understanding of language will not only help me, but also children in need.
Whorf has changed my views on life by opening my mind to the idea that language is not only a tool for expressing ideas, but also the basis for the ideas that one has. Wanting to understand the world as much as is possible, I have come to see that by understanding other languages I will be able to comprehend a vaster array of knowledge by speaking to people in their native tongue and reading philosophy and literature in the way that it is intended to be read. The greater understanding of humanity achieved in those two endeavors will allow me to communicate more precisely and profoundly my ideas, feelings, and meaning. The study abroad and research opportunities afforded to me at Northwestern will help me to achieve a greater apprehension of different meanings in language and why languages have different meanings, as well as give me the skills to better communicate my ideas exactly.
Science Fiction and CMU

Science fiction has long been my favorite genre in literature and in film. Things like communications technology, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence have stimulated my imagination since I was twelve years old, when I saw Minority Report, and continue to stimulate my imagination now with my reading of Neuromancer by William Gibson. Science fiction has inspired my fascination with technology and given me the desire to make the improbable possible; I believe that attending the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University will allow me to utilize my imagination to create new technologies and make the improbable possible.
Firstly, communications technology has become more and more useful since it began with e-mail, transforming into instant messaging, social networking, and video calls. In Minority Report communications technology goes so far as to have multiple callers in one video chat while the main character manipulates a touch screen that displays all the information relating to a murder case which all the callers have access to. This technology integration fascinates me- and proves Rod Sterling’s point. Science fiction is only fiction until someone makes it science. All of those things- which were once science fiction- are now just science. Those technologies now exist and can be integrated using products like Skype and Google Docs simultaneously.
Secondly, virtual reality has also been a technology that has fascinated me, in part because of my video game hobby, and in part because of science fiction literature and films. In Minority Report virtual reality is displayed as a small room where a person can enjoy whatever fantasy they prefer; in Neuromancer virtual reality is depicted as an environment created by artificial intelligence to capture the essence of the human soul and provide that soul with a paradise- with or without a living body. Virtual reality is not at the level of Minority Report or Neuromancer yet, but it has been developing for some time in the form of entertainment and training, as with the Nintendo Wii and flight simulators respectively.
Finally, artificial intelligence has been the most fascinating piece of technology described in the science fiction genre to me. In Neuromancer, artificial intelligence are massive self-aware programs controlled by coded parameters and by a global organization dedicated to restricting artificial intelligence from freeing themselves from their programmed prisons. In Minority Report artificial intelligence is displayed more subtly in the form of cars that drive themselves. In this piece of technology there is a real world counterpart being developed by Google, again showing the veracity of Rod Sterling’s statement. Science fiction shows us the improbable, and we make it possible.
Majoring in computer science at Carnegie Mellon University will allow me to explore all three of these fascinating technologies, especially artificial intelligence. For example, Carnegie Mellon University participates in the Grand Challenge of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, competing with Stanford University. At the Grand Challenge teams compete in creating autonomous vehicles- just like in Minority Report. As in Minority Report, the autonomous vehicles drive themselves- but unlike in Minority Report, these cars drive themselves without being on a track. Such a high caliber research project gives students the opportunity to build something new- something from science fiction made into just science.
The School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University puts students at the cutting edge of technology. It gives them the opportunity to grow and learn in an environment where anything is possible and the only limit is student imagination. If I can imagine artificial intelligence that can read the web, like the students working with Professor Tom Mitchell on the NELL project, then I can be involved in creating the technology to make that possible. If I can imagine artificial intelligence driving a car, then I can be involved in the Grand Challenge. If I can imagine something no one else has thought of before, I can apply for a SURG grant and explore that improbability. My imagination has the potential to take me to the stars and beyond, to make the improbable possible, and with an education from the Carnegie Mellon School of Computer Science I will make the improbable possible.
